How to Prevent Winter Storm Damage & Make Your Feather Flags Last Longer

Written by Andrea Gibbs | Creative Growth Lead + Senior Display Consultant

Feather flags are an excellent way to promote your brand, event, or message. However, ensuring their longevity requires proper care and maintenance.

These tips also apply to TeardropBowhead, and Rectangular Flag Banners. Follow these expert tips to keep your flag banners looking vibrant and functional for years.

Why Proper Maintenance Matters

Maintaining your feather flags not only extends their lifespan but also protects your investment. Neglect can lead to premature wear and tear, fading, and damage, resulting in additional costs. Avoid these common mistakes to get the most out of your feather flags.

Tips to Prolong the Life of Your Feather Flags

Tip #1: Protect from Extreme Weather Conditions

Feather Banners and other Flag Banners are not designed to be used in extreme weather conditions. These include but are not limited to winds over 40MPH, storms, and blizzard conditions. Please take down the flag banners and safely store them when extreme weather conditions are expected. Failure to do so might cause premature damage to both the poles and flags.

Weather to Avoid:

  • Winds exceeding 40MPH
  • Heavy rainstorms
  • Winter blizzards

Storage Tips:

  • Bring your flags inside during severe weather.
  • To prevent mold & mildew, ensure they’re dry before
storing in a cool, dry place.

Tip #2: Ensure Proper Installation

Improper installation can lead to damage over time. Follow these steps to install your feather flag correctly:

  • Use a spike base with the head above ground for smooth rotation.
  • Secure the flag with tension cords, but avoid overtightening.
  • Insert poles fully into reinforced corners to prevent strain on the material.

Keep the head of the spike base above the ground (for rotation)

Always use tension cords

Tip #3: Minimize External Force

External force from sharp objects or mishandling can easily damage your feather flag.

Preventative Measures:

  • Keep flags away from barbed wire and sharp edges.
  • Protect base poles from accidental damage by landscapers or vehicles.
